Our working world is changing rapidly. As a result, many professionals and executives face new challenges. Why? Because we increasingly need to think in more complex ways, are less able to plan, and have to tolerate more uncertainty. At the same time, we still need to deliver results and perform effectively.

No wonder many people are reaching their limits and ask themselves: “Why am I doing all this anyway?” Proven strategies are losing their value because they were developed for predictable situations – which will become increasingly rare in the future. Additionally, rapid technological development challenges existing business models and requires completely new forms of collaboration.

But how can these upheavals be managed? What attitude and abilities will managers and employees need in the future? One thing is clear: Tomorrow we will have to lead differently than today.

What Truly Helps Leaders Advance?

1

Leading with Emotional Competence: The Foundation for Stability and Trust

When pressure increases, changes pile up, and setbacks must be absorbed, we need emotional stability. A team leader who loses composure in front of their team after a failed product launch will hardly build trust.

Therefore, it’s essential for leaders to perceive and regulate their own emotions to remain capable of action and find serenity in dealing with stress. It also involves maintaining one’s health and strengthening resilience.

At the same time, leaders must empathize with their employees and recognize whether they need support and how they can be encouraged. Empathy is the key to understanding the needs of each individual and fostering a strong sense of togetherness, especially in hybrid work models.

2

Solving Problems Differently: Flexibility Instead of Rigid Plans

“We’ve always done it this way” no longer works. Many situations are complex, and a clear relationship between cause and effect is not discernible. The leader’s task now is to find an appropriate approach for each problem. Often, only ‘trial and error’ helps. Those who are willing to try new things and quickly change course if necessary will lead more successfully.

Think less in rigid plans and more in flexible options. It means making quick decisions under uncertainty and learning from mistakes.

3

Actively Shape Relationships: Together We Are Stronger

The lone fighter who pushes through and overcomes all challenges belongs to the past. Rather, leaders must foster genuine collaboration, as many challenges can only be solved together. Especially in global teams, it is crucial to build strong relationships and an effective communication culture.

Consciously strengthen relationships within the team and create a trusting environment where everyone can contribute their strengths and potential and feel valued. This way, you can successfully overcome conflicts and changes together.

An open feedback culture and the promotion of diversity are essential here.

4

Think Creatively and Create Space: Give Innovation Room

For changing work processes, things must be done and thought of differently. However, Out-of-the-box thinking is only possible when providing the right conditions. Introduce weekly “thinking hours” in which no operational topics are discussed, but ideas can flow freely. The result: creative solutions and motivated employees.

Recognize both your own potential and the strengths of your employees – and use them.

5

Tolerate Contradictions: Navigate in Uncertainty

Many business decisions are characterized by uncertainty and contradictions. “Should we change the proven product or leave it as it is?” Such questions can paralyze and make decisions difficult. At the same time, it is the task of leaders to decide.

For successful leaders, it will therefore become increasingly important to think strategically and develop visions. After all, it’s mainly about weighing equivalent options and then making professional decisions. You must find viable solutions for difficult situations, plus conflicts in the company must be recognized and resolved.

How Do You Become Fit for Future?

You will only cope with the various changes and uncertainties if you question familiar thought patterns and behaviors and change them when necessary. As a leader of the future, you must grow and continuously develop. New competencies must be practiced and trained. The five skills mentioned are closely connected and often depend on each other.

An example: Once, a CFO who had argued with numbers and facts for decades realized through coaching that in the changing work environment, he also needs to train and use his intuition to make faster decisions.

The first step: Learn about your abilities and strengths and use them specifically. Tailored coaching can provide valuable support.

What do you think: Which abilities will make you more successful in the future? What are your experiences? I look forward to your thoughts in the comments!
